Operation Blessing; Making Waves in Haiti

Posted by Santa Monica Admin, on August 23rd, 2010 in Announcements, Sustainability

The Goal of Operation Blessing is simple; “to alleviate human suffering caused by poverty.”  But, it’s in the act of alleviating the suffering that they believe the greatest impact is made, which is why they focus on completely involving the communities they are assisting.   In Haiti, Operation Blessing isn’t simply giving away fish – they are giving away the opportunity to learn how to farm fish!  Tilapia in fact, and it’s working…

It’s working so well, we’ve decide to make Operation Blessing one of first choices for funds from our 2010 RSVP Program!

Operation Blessing’s efforts in Haiti focus on extremely poor villages that surround Lake Azuei, the nation’s largest body of water.  Although fishing has long been a traditional livelihood, dwindling stocks have exacted a toll on local communities.

Working with Caribbean Harvest, a Haitian charity specializing in tilapia aquaculture, local villagers are beginning to return to the water!   Families are given the necessary tools and training they need to quickly raise tilapia for local markets and positive results are already being felt.

If you want to learn more, this 30 minute film will take you through their entire process of breeding the tilapia and stocking them in floating cages in Lake Azuei.

We’re happy to contribute to these positive aquaculture efforts and we hope you’ll take some time to learn about Operation Blessing’s efforts and make your own contribution!
