As we prepare to say hello to 2013 we thought we’d take a look back on what a wonderful year 2012 was for all of us at Santa Monica Seafood!
We have to roll back the clock to January to start looking at some of the amazing items we added to our inventory this past year…
- Skuna Bay Salmon was first on the list (we just celebrated our one year anniversary as the exclusive regional distributor of this amazing salmon)
- Hawaiian Kampachi
- Loch Etive Steelhead Salmon
- California King Salmon (okay, not so new but 2012 was an exciting local salmon season!)
- Locally Raised California White Sea Bass
- Locally Harvested Sablefish
And speaking of locally harvested fish, one of the biggest events of the year was our June acquisition of Central Coast Seafood! We added both purchasing power and delivery reach to our sales, customer service, purchasing and delivery teams and extended our delivery area north to the Monterey region.
Connecting with Customers Year Round
What better way to introduce new products than at our yearly Chef’s Luncheons! Our first Chef’s Luncheon was held in February at the spectacular La Quinta Resort & Club – setting the bar pretty high for the rest of the year! Our other luncheons lived up to the challenge… Scott’s Restaurant and Bar in Costa Mesa hosted us for a spring Chef’s Luncheon in April, we spent time with customers down in San Diego at The Oceanaire Seafood Room in May, The setting was spectacular and the food a masterpiece at our September Chef’s Luncheon in Arizona at the beautiful Mastro’s Ocean Club in Scottsdale, AZ! It was back to Mastro’s in December (but this time at their gorgeous Las Vegas location) for our final event of the year – what a way to wrap up!
We took to the sea twice in 2012, our first customer fishing trip was held in February out of San Pedro and our second one in July with Captain Jason and his crew on the Dolphin out of Fisherman’s Landing in San Diego.
Later in the summer We enjoyed a night of baseball with customers and colleagues at Diamondbacks vs Dodgers Night – destined to become a yearly tradition!
The Santa Monica Seafood Golf Tournament is one of the most anticipated events of the year – and 2012 surpassed all expectations! We took over the greens at the beautiful Pacific Palms Resort on June 5th and a wonderful time was had by all.
We broke from our traditional wine tour format in October and hosted customers on a local “beer tour” instead! Who couldn’t have a good time checking out the inner workings of some local breweries while enjoying plenty of good beer and food along the way?
Our Seafood Pocket Guides continue to be a popular way to keep everyone on your staff educated on our wide selection… we also created a useful poster that combines 5 of our most popular guides (ask your Santa Monica Sales Representative to drop one off)!
SMS Around the World
Every month of the year, someone at Santa Monica Seafood is on a plane (sometimes its a huge airbus winging its way to Asia, other times its a De Havilland Beaver on floats heading into the Canadian wilderness…).
In keeping with our commitment to bring you the most responsibly sourced seafood on the planet, we also make time to travel to the many locales, both near and far, that we source seafood from. We spent time with Shrimp farmers and Squid processors in Southeast Asia, we visited Tilapia farms and processing facilities in China, we checked in on Shrimp and Crabmeat production in Mexico and we headed to the Pacific Northwest to visit with fishermen and processors in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. Closer to home we dedicated a lot of time over the past year to working closely with fishermen from California’s Central Coast making sure we are all on the same page when it comes to quality and safety.
On top of all that, we attended a wide variety of industry events; The Boston Seafood Show, The 10th annual Seafood Summit in Hong Kong, the GOAL meeting in Bangkok – our purchasing team spent a fair amount of time on the road this year (as they do every year)!
We also had a number of customers join us this year on some trips up to Canada to visit Skuna Bay’s salmon farms – no better way to understand where a product truly comes from then to visit yourself!
Our RSVP Program had a Busy 2012
Over the past year we welcomed the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), Gulf of California industrial shrimp fisheries improvement project (FIP) into our RSVP program along with the Fish Reef Project and the Birdshead Leatherback Turtle Project. 2012 saw renewed funding for several RSVP projects including Heal the Bay’s Key to the Sea education program and the Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI) White Sea Bass and California Yellowtail projects!
We wrapped up the year with a holiday turkey giveaway – thankful for the chance to help out the good folks at Caterina’s Club.
