We are committed to educating and moving Santa Monica Seafood, its vendors and customers towards offering more sustainable options, increasing community understanding on environmental responsibility and being an agent of change in the seafood industry.
- We were the first seafood distributor to enter into a formal partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program; working with them to apply their rankings to our inventory (updated quarterly). We are actively participating in helping develop their research prioritization and scope of assessments and work closely with them on events and educational opportunities.
- We created the first and only Responsible Sourcing Vendor Program wherein we apply a percentage of our annual seafood purchases towards financially supporting fishery, food safety and education programs around the world and towards qualifying and verifying suppliers who share our commitment to food safety, supply integrity and sustainable practices.
- We are the first and only seafood distributor to include a sustainability ranking on all customer invoices based on the level of sustainability of each product purchased, along with a weighted average GPA for all the products purchased to help you monitor the level of sustainability in your seafood purchases.
Santa Monica Seafood relies on a number of international certification bodies along with regulations implemented by the United States Government to help guide our purchasing decisions.
We’re proud to be an acting member of the National Fisheries Institute, the California Restaurant Association, California Fisheries & Seafood Institute, Ocean Trust and also receiving our Best Aquaculture Practices certification for our Rancho Dominguez facility.
Santa Monica Seafood is the first and only seafood company in the United States to achieve both the internationally recognized FSSC 22000 and ISO 14001 certifications.
ISO 14001 recognizes that standards throughout our entire operation help continually reduce our environmental impact.
FSSC 22000 certification guarantees you are buying from a company with the best food manufacturing systems in the world and that our products consistently meet all quality, safety and labeling requirements. It shows that we are serious about food safety, have greater traceability of our products, and that our systems and processes are independently verified against recognized standards of excellence.
We also maintain current Marine Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification on a wide variety of species.

Key to Our Success is Our Sourcing and Purchasing
Sourcing over 40 million pounds of fresh and frozen seafood a year isn’t easy, but we’ve been perfecting it since 1939.
Santa Monica Seafood believes the sourcing and purchasing of our products are critical keys to our success in offering the freshest and most eco-friendly seafood available.
We’re constantly looking for, and testing, new suppliers on a world-wide basis. We meet most of our suppliers and visit many of their plants to assess the quality and safety of their operations and products.
Our Responsible Sourcing/Vendor Partnership Program (RSVP) takes our commitment to the industry to the next level. Designed to support projects that we believe will lead to a more sustainable future, our RSVP program funds a variety of projects.
We work closely with our colleagues at FishWise to vet and select RSVP funding recipients. FishWise promotes the health and recovery of ocean ecosystems by providing innovative market-based tools to the seafood industry. They support sustainability through environmentally responsible business practices and help us stay connected with the projects we fund. To learn more about FishWise, visit their website.
In addition to our work with the RSVP Program, Santa Monica Seafood is a founding member of Sea Pact; an alliance formed between nine of the leading, like-minded Seafood Distributors in North America. This unprecedented alliance is a first of its kind in the seafood industry. To learn more about the work Sea Pact is doing, visit their website: www.seapact.org
